High-performance resins

The performance of composites is only as good as the underlying materials: the more demanding the application, the higher the quality needed for the components. Used as binders, silicone resins from WACKER combine extraordinary properties, making them perfect as the matrix material in especially challenging applications.

SILRES® silicone resins greatly enhance the performance of composite materials in electrical engineering and design applications, allowing them to withstand ongoing extreme temperatures. In addition, the resulting composites retain their electrical and water-repellent properties, as well as their outstanding mechanical strength.

More on the electrical insulation industry

Applications:

  • Silicone-resin-bound laminates based on mica, glass fibers or mineral fibers
  • Binders for producing preceramics
  • Binders for manufacturing ceramic/sintered molded pieces based on inorganic matrix materials

Advantages:

  • Excellent electrical insulation properties over a wide temperature and frequency range
  • High heat resistance
  • Water-repellent and highly resistant to moisture
  • Flame retardant; no toxic vapors released in the event of fire
  • Products resulting from pyrolysis are electrically insulating
  • Long-term weathering and radiation resistance
  • Media resistance

Novel EV battery safety concepts rely on silicone resins. Silicone-resin-based fiber composites offer an unprecedented combination of fire resistance and thermal insulation.

In the event of fire, they react with fillers and fibers to form ceramic materials. When used as battery housings or heat shields, they can protect the vehicle passenger compartment from the high temperatures that occur during thermal runaway.

Applications:

  • Heat shields for batteries
  • Battery housings

Advantages:

  • Non-flammable
  • Good mechanical properties, even in a fire
  • Low emissions; no toxic vapors released in the event of a fire
  • Suitable for use in common composite production methods
