The WACKER Group’s U.S. activities began in 1965, when the Munich-based chemical company established Wacker Chemicals Corporation in New York. This move provided WACKER with direct access to North American markets. In the U.S., WACKER now operates six production sites, five sales offices and has twenty-one distributors, thus ensuring close proximity to its customers. North and South America is one of WACKER’s most important forward-looking markets, accounting for around 15.7 percent of global Group sales €8.21 billion (2022).
The Group’s WACKER SILICONES, WACKER POLYSILICON, WACKER POLYMERS and WACKER BIOSOLUTIONS business divisions are represented in the United States by Wacker Chemical Corporation in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in the US
In 2021, WACKER strengthened its business by adding a pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) location for plasmid DNA (pDNA) based in San Diego, Calif. The demand for pDNA has risen sharply in recent years. This new WACKER location includes a capacity up to 500 liters for the production and purification of pDNA. For decades, WACKER has been manufacturing therapeutic proteins, living microbial products and vaccines for clinical development as well as commercial supply. This proprietary pDNA technology enhances WACKER's portfolio and creates a U.S. presence in serving as a contract manufacturer for the pharmaceutical industry.
US Healthcare transparency coverage
The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Labor have issued the "transparency in coverage" rule. This rule imposes new transparency requirements on group health plans, such as the medical plan sponsored by Wacker Chemical Corporation and its related entities in the US. The purpose of the requirement is to enable consumers to make informed health care purchasing decisions.
Transparency refers to the ability for members to get a cost-sharing estimate of covered services. In this first phase, our medical partner, Priority Health, is providing members with a variety of tools and resources that they need to make informed health care decisions. Priority Health is committed to making enhancements over the next two years, as the requirements evolve.
