WACKER Announces FDA-Approval For Blown Films Additive in Food Packaging

Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov 13, 2024

Wacker Chemical Corporation will be presenting GENIOPLAST® Pellet 345, the company’s high-performance silicone-based additive for thermoplastic elastomers at the Compounding World Expo North America tradeshow in Cleveland, Ohio, from November 13 to 14. Based on its unique silicone copolymer structure, Pellet 345 is a versatile silicone processing aid and performance additive enhancing the mechanical properties of blown films in a variety of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) applications, including rubber shoe soles, automotive parts, medical devices, and consumer electronics and wearables. The product recently received FDA approval and can now be used in food contact and specifically blown-film applications in food packaging due to its non-toxic and odorless properties.

GENIOPLAST® Pellet 345 is a pelletized silicone copolymer and has been specifically designed for TPU applications. When 1 – 2% of it is applied in TPU compounds, mold release properties can be improved and stickiness can be significantly reduced. If added at 10% and higher, GENIOPLAST® Pellet 345 reduces shore hardness and provides a smooth surface and unique soft touch properties. (photo: WACKER).

GENIOPLAST® Pellet 345 is a silicone copolymer containing over 90% siloxane. When applied to the blown film process, it can produce or enhance a wide variety of products, ranging from simple monolayer films for bags to very complex multilayer structures used in food packaging. Multilayer film structures can be made by blown film coextrusion which is a process in which two or more polymers are extruded and joined together in a feedblock or die to form a single structure with multiple layers.

FDA-Approved Attributes

GENIOPLAST® Pellet 345 has an unique structure and is a flexible and durable material which contains neither plasticizers nor reinforcing fillers. It can be processed using standard thermoplastic processing techniques. The high siloxane content prevents impairment of the elastomeric properties at low temperatures. Pellet 345 is a silicone copolymer delivering numerous flow and processing benefits, as well as improvements to the mechanical properties of the polypropylene based films, such as bi-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films. Pellet 345 increases flexibility and elongation of films enabling films producers to further downgauge films. With the FDA approval, films producers can leverage GENIOPLAST® Pellet 345 can gain more performance with less material in food packaging.

WACKER’s advanced thermoplastic engineered materials offer a strong alternative to PFAS for blown films. This innovation greatly improves the food packaging industry and creates new opportunities in the compounding and masterbatch sectors. The company's dedication to delivering customized solutions addresses the unique needs of its customers while promoting sustainability and competitive growth.

To assist customers in identifying their unique formulaic needs in real-time at the tradeshow, WACKER is offering a simple, easy to use interactive decision-tree at booth #C918. This will serve as a one-stop shop that will allow customers to view the full depth of WACKER’s portfolio of GENIOPLAST® and GENIOSIL® products which are FDA-approved additives used for processing and film applications., and flame retardants. The presentation will focus on different properties, such as scratch and mar resistance, elongation, filler treatment and the option of creating flexible polymers.

"WACKER is dedicated to innovation and customer engagement. Our investment in R&D and creative marketing approaches enhance our products and customer interactions," said Dr. John Young, Technical Service Manager for Functional Additives at Wacker Chemical Corporation. "The interactive decision tree helps customers drill deeper into their needs and increases their understanding of our capabilities which lead to more productive discussions about client needs in real-time.”
