WACKER’s Cost-Efficient Solution for Growing Cultivated Meat in a Cultivator

WACKER – An Experienced Technology Partner for the Food Industry

WACKER is uniquely positioned as a supplier of food ingredients and an expert in protein production. For over 20 years, our scientists have continuously developed protein production technology platforms ( ESETEC® and FOLDTEC®) that enable us to produce key components for animal-free cell culture media.

At the same time, we know all about the quality requirements imposed on food production because we have a long history of producing food-grade ingredients for the food industry. This enables us to improve both the availability and the cost of the key medium components needed for your cultivated meat and seafood technologies.

We are working on a portfolio of growth factors, media proteins, and peptides for use in cultivated meat production and will be constantly adding new products. In addition, we will develop the culture ingredient you request, from gene to protein. We can be a strong partner by your side.

Naturally Occurring Cyclodextrins

Our portfolio of cyclodextrins is known for its positive effect on cell culture conditions and for supporting the growth phase. Cyclodextrins* are cyclic oligosaccharides made from starch that can shuttle nutrients, metabolites to, and toxins from, the cell and stabilize proteins due to their unique molecular structure.

Our Performance Profile – Relative Growth of Bovine Stem Cells

When comparing the relative growth of the bovine stem cells, both passages show that WACKER’s solution is superior to the competitor at both 25 ng/ml and 50 ng/ml.

Q&A

WACKER is about to launch a food-grade bovine FGF-2. Larger quantities in the multi-gram range are available upon request at competitive prices. We can supply recombinant FGF-2 of different species, ranging from chicken to trout. Furthermore, we can supply you with recombinant IGF-1 and transferrin at competitive prices. And we are working on a variety of other key components.

So, don’t hesitate to get in contact if you are interested in other animal-free cell media components.

WACKER has joined Race to Zero, the UN’s carbon neutrality initiative. We want to pursue specific projects and measures to halve our absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, relative to 2020, and to ensure that net-zero is achieved by 2045.

Our cultivated meat activities can benefit environmental sustainability, social sustainability and nutritional sustainability.

We understand that media costs must come down considerably, and we want to be your go-to partner in that respect. WACKER is a reliable partner, with decades of experience in proprietary protein production technologies, industrial-scale fermentation capacity, and a deep understanding of food industry requirements.

We maintain close contact with the authorities to keep up with the latest regulations and are therefore in a position to offer our customers a package full of benefits

WACKER offers the complete set-up for precision fermentation, starting from gene synthesis, to production process development and piloting, through to commercial production at a food-certified facility.

One example of how collaboration with WACKER works is that of Aleph Farms, the first cultivated-meat company to grow steaks directly from non-genetically engineered animal cells. WACKER is working with Aleph Farms on the development of streamlined production processes for essential growth medium proteins to cost-effectively grow cultivated meat.

We believe cultivated meat will become an important pillar of future food production. We are convinced that the technology will develop to a price point and a quality level that makes it an obvious choice while at the same time having a low carbon footprint. Furthermore, we understand that it will still take some years to reach that point and that current obstacles need to be overcome – at WACKER, we want to help out with this!
