School provides support and guidance
WACKER College in Kosgoda offers sound training measures as a stepping stone to a bright future
Kosgoda , Mar 07, 2025
The beaming faces of the successful graduates testify to the excellent reputation that WACKER College has established as a privately run school. The school in Sri Lanka supported by the WACKER Relief Fund supports young people from kindergarten through to the start of their working lives.

WACKER College in Kosgoda currently teaches 285 children and young people in grades 1 to 11. The English skills the students acquire there provide the graduates with good prospects for the future.
The parents of many pupils are day laborers who only have limited earning opportunities. “For the children from such needy families, our school is a stepping stone to a life with their own income,” says Mirko Kappelhoff, Chairman of the WACKER Relief Fund’s Board of Trustees, who visited Sri Lanka to make sure that the donations were being used responsibly.
Since its establishment after the devastating tsunami in 2004, WACKER College has established itself as a professional institution. Principal Koshali and monk Sadu run the school in cooperation with the nonprofit aid organization "Future for Children".
The manifold sports activities and tournaments, such as cricket, netball and athletics, are also very popular. There is no shortage of offers in the fine arts either; the schoolchildren make music together and acquire handicraft skills.
Helping others help themselves
The WACKER Relief Fund story began when the catastrophic tsunami in December 2004 hit Sri Lanka and devastated the lives of people in the regions affected. Thousands lost their lives or livelihoods. WACKER promptly made donations to aid projects and founded the WACKER Relief Fund. The fund – a nonprofit foundation – has been true to its motto of “Helping others help themselves” ever since, giving victims of natural disasters the chance at a better life. Aid projects include the school in Kosgoda, which opened its doors in 2006 and has offered a curriculum through to high-school level since 2014.
The WACKER Relief Fund would not be able to finance the school in Kosgoda without the help of the donation program. “Even with a small monthly donation, everyone who participates in the donation program can help make a big difference,” emphasizes Mirko Kappelhoff, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, adding “Thanks to every colleague who has helped, through education, to pave the way to a brighter future for children and young people.” The safe haven offered by our partner schools gives the whole family support and guidance."
