Timber has many advantages as a material for building and construction: it is a renewable resource, easy to process and has a pleasant natural look and feel. However, when used outdoors it is very susceptible to weathering. Water in particular poses a major threat. The absorption and release of water cause wood to swell and shrink, leading to extensive damage to its surface. Water also dramatically accelerates the rotting process.
Conventional wood protection, such as water-repellent impregnations and coatings, wears off over time.
