SILRES® IC 900 – Unique Binder with Double the Benefits
SILRES® IC 900, our newly developed methyl phenyl silicone resin, allows manufacturers to produce coatings that possess a high solids and correspondingly low solvent content. In addition, it also facilitates the production of high-build coatings.
Wide-Ranging Demands on High-Build Coatings
High-build coatings are in great demand in industrial applications where coatings are difficult to apply and are exposed to extreme conditions and demanding environments. They are used, for example, as anti-corrosion coatings in chemical plants that are characterized by their complex designs. On the one hand because high-build coatings are particularly effective in protecting metal substrates. On the other because they are easier to apply than conventional paints, which must be applied in uniformly thin layers, for example during repair and maintenance operations in hard-to-access areas. The good news is that we have developed a novel binder specifically for such applications that require solvent-based, heat-resistant paints.
SILRES® IC 900 Exceeds Expectations
The methyl phenyl silicone resin SILRES® IC 900 is delivered as a pure, undiluted active ingredient. This novel binder is characterized by a molecular structure that, depending on the application and formulation, produces a close-meshed network at 100 to 280 degrees Celsius while still retaining a certain amount of flexibility. This flexibility prevents cracks from forming in the cured coating, even when it is subjected to thermal stress. SILRES® IC 900 can therefore also be used to formulate coatings that are applied in thick layers. Thanks to this innovation, the coatings industry now has a silicone resin binder for high-temperature applications with a dry-film thickness of over 100 micrometers.
High Solids and Low Solvent Content
By virtue of its low viscosity, this alkoxy-functionalized methyl phenyl silicone resin can be used for formulating both high-build and high-solids coatings. As the solids content of these coatings is over 80 percent, their solvent content is correspondingly low. Coatings based on SILRES® IC 900 can be formulated as either 1 or 2-component products. Upon curing, these coatings are highly resistant to chemicals, and their color remains stable.
A Quick Look at the Main Benefits of SILRES® IC 900
Coatings based on our methyl phenyl silicone resin binder offer many advantages:
- Heat-resistant up to 600 °C (when pigmented)
- Very good hardness/flexibility balance
- Excellent hydrophobicity and anti-corrosive properties
- Excellent adhesion to metal substrates
- No cracking or blistering, even with a layer thickness > 100 μm
- Ideal for formulations with a high solids content
- Suitable for blending with organic resins
High-Solids Coatings for Heat-Resistant Applications
Heat-resistant coatings play a vital role in automotive and process engineering, as well as in household applications. Thanks to SILRES® IC 900, both low-solvent and high-build coatings can be formulated for all such applications.
For example:
- Piping systems and plant components in the petrochemicals industry
- Pots and pans
- Ovens and stoves
- Range hoods
- Fireplaces
