Biocide Formulations
CAVASOL® Cyclodextrins for Improved Biocide Formulations
Prevention of microbial spoilage is essential in all aqueous-based products (for example paints & coatings, emulsions, adhesives, and cleaning products). Water-borne paint formulations contain sufficient nutrients to maintain bacterial growth if the pH and temperature are right. With CAVAMAX® and CAVASOL®, we have the solution to prevent biocide formulations from causing problems.
CAVAMAX® and CAVASOL® cyclodextrins are a well-known group of natural carbohydrates, which in water can encapsulate other organic molecules in a reversible equilibrium-controlled process. This ‘molecular encapsulation’ effectively modifies the properties of the organic guest molecules (like OIT or IPBC), e.g. reduces their volatility, extends their release over time, and improves their stability and solubility in water.
Solubility Enhancement of IPBC in Water
With a broad-spectrum, fast-acting antifungal with good heat and pH stability, IPBC is recommended for use in paints, coatings or in household cleaning products.
IPBC exhibits efficacy against a broad spectrum of fungal species. CAVASOL® significantly enhanced the solubility of IPBC in water, opening scope for formulations that are free of VOCs or surfactants. In outdoor tests on coatings containing CAVASOL®, both IPBC and OIT demonstrated improved resistance to microbial growth on the film without affecting the coating performance.
Incorporation of CAVASOL® IPBC and OIT into coating formulations did not impact the coating performance or properties and imparted an equivalent level of in-can preservation to the product.
