We produce hyperpure polysilicon – an important raw material for the photovoltaic and semiconductor industries — at three sites in line with identical sustainable standards.
The chemical sector is one of the most energy-intensive industries. At WACKER, we are aware of the responsibility this entails. We want to live up to this duty with ambitious climate-protection targets we have set for ourselves, and with a product portfolio that contributes to the success of the climate and energy transition.
In Germany, the transition to renewable energy sources is well underway. By 2030, the share of renewable energies is to account for 80% of the total electricity mix; the target for 2045 is climate neutrality. Of course, this also applies to us at WACKER. We are making great strides: by 2030, we aim to cut our greenhouse gas emissions in half and reduced our energy consumption by 15%. At the same time, our products are already helping ensure the success of the climate and energy transition in Germany.

Whether wind power or solar energy – many of our products help harvest renewable energy. Perhaps the best-known example is our hyperpure polysilicon, the most important and fundamental raw material for photovoltaics. The quality requirements for polysilicon are constantly on the rise: with a purity of 99.9999999999% (the so-called 12N purity), it contributes significantly to the further breakthrough of solar energy. WACKER is the only company in Europe to produce such hyperpure polysilicon for photovoltaics.
Our products are also indispensable in other areas of sustainable energy generation and supply: they can not only be found directly at the source in wind turbines, solar farms and hydroelectric power plants, but also along the entire power supply chain. This includes cable fittings for ground cables, overhead power lines, safety cables, switchgears – all the way to cables for household appliances and electric vehicles.

Wind Power

Overhead Power Lines
Insulators made of POWERSIL® silicones from WACKER have outstanding heat, frost and UV resistance as well as water-repellent properties. A silicone coating also transfers these properties to porcelain insulators. Silicone insulators are also characterized by their lightweight construction.

Insulators
Higher energy demands require ever larger insulators, especially in AC/DC converters. To keep the weight as low as possible, these large-scale insulators boast lightweight designs and are made of silicone. Water beads roll off silicone insulators even when the surface is dirty. The hydrophobic effect of the silicone is transferred to the layer of dirt. This minimizes the cleaning effort required and protects against pollution flashovers.

Ground Cables
