GENIOSIL® VTME

GENIOSIL® VTME is a clear, colorless liquid with a
characteristically aromatic odor.
- CAS No. 1067-53-4
- Empirical formula C11H24O6Si
- Molecular weight 280.39
Properties
The use of GENIOSIL® VTME in mineral-filled polymers (e.g. polymers filled with kaolin, ATH or magnesium hydroxide) leads to a marked improvement in the mechanical and electrical properties, and to increased moisture resistance in particular. In addition, it renders the particles extremely water-repellent, which results in improved dispersibility, reduced melt viscosity and thus improved processability. Use of GENIOSIL® VTME as a co-monomer in polymers results in binders which, thanks to crosslinking and strong adhesion to the substrate, exhibit much improved wet scrub resistance and abrasion resistance. Organic surface coatings will adhere more strongly to inorganic substrates, such as glass or metals, that have been treated with GENIOSIL® VTME. As a result, these coatings demonstrate markedly greater scratch resistance and resistance to chemicals.
1. General processing information
GENIOSIL® VTME is highly miscible with standard organic solvents, such as ethers, hydrocarbons and acetone. GENIOSIL® VTME can be dissolved in neutral water to an extent of 5 wt % by stirring. As in aqueous acids and bases, GENIOSIL® VTME hydrolyzes in water (2-methoxyethanol is released) to form silantriol, which, after some time, reacts with itself to form siloxanes.
2. GENIOSIL® VTME in filled polymers
Fillers are treated either with pure GENIOSIL® VTME or a solution thereof. It may be necessary to pre-treat the substrate with water and/or a catalyst. Subsequent incorporation of the treated filler into organic polymers, such as EPM or EPDM, is preferably effected via peroxide or radiation-initiated grafting. During processing of these polymers (e.g. in extruders), grounding and an inert gas atmosphere are essential to prevent sparks from occurring.
3. GENIOSIL® VTME as a polymer building block
To incorporate GENIOSIL® VTME in organic polymers by way of co-polymerization, it is added as a comonomer – along with typically used monomers and free-radical initiators (diazo compounds or peroxides) – during production of the solution or emulsion polymer. Radical grafting of GENIOSIL® VTME to organic polymers is preferably effected during extrusion in the presence of a peroxide.
4. GENIOSIL® VTME as a surface modifier
Used as a primer, GENIOSIL® VTME is applied as an aqueous or organic solution to an inorganic substrate (e.g. metal or glass surfaces). After GENIOSIL® VTME has dried and bonded to the substrate, an organic surface coating can be applied using a standard technique (e.g. spraying, knife coating).
Packaging
- 1000 kg IBC
- 200 kg Drum
- 25 kg Pail
- 0,25 kg Glass Bottle
Storage
GENIOSIL® VTME has a shelf life of at least 12 months
if stored in tightly closed original containers at 25 °C.
The “Best use before end” date of each batch is shown
on the product label.
If the material is kept beyond the shelf life recommended
on the product label, it is not necessarily unusable,
but a quality control should be performed on the
properties relevant to the application.
