Particularly suitable for mineral building substrates such as concrete, brick, limestone, natural and artificial stone, plaster, wood and coated metal surfaces as a permanent protection against graffiti. It also provides protection against stickers and posters. Before application thoroughly examine the substrate, and decide if a suitable primer is needed.
Processing
Apply SILRES® BS 712 US to a clean dry surface at temperatures above 40 F (5 °C). Surface may be cleaned by scrubbing, washing with a common solvent or cleaner, or power washing with water.
SILRES® BS 712 US can be thinned to the desired application viscosity. Before application the material can be diluted up to 30-50% with aliphatic type organic solvents. Aliphatic solvents are the preferred choice, and a typical choice can be mineral spirits. Other solvents may be used however all combinations must be tested to ensure clarity of the coating, solvency and stability. Weak solvent combinations can lead to a loss of cure, clarity or even precipitation of the coating’s solids. For this reason methyl acetate is not recommended.
After dilution, the ready-to-use product should be filtered through a 100 μm filter.
With proper protective equipment, SILRES® BS 712 US can be applied with a brush or a roller for smal surface areas, or an airless sprayer for larger surface areas. See the SDS for proper protective equipment.
A primer is not needed prior to applying SILRES® BS 712 US to most common mineral surfaces. For more difficult substrates, a diluted SILRES® BS 712 can be applied as a first layer, followed by a second later soon thereafter. Due to it’s consistency SILRES® BS 712 US is easy to be applied in a single coat.
A test area should be applied especially on painted or surfaces already damaged by graffiti.
After use, the spray equipment and lines must immediately be flushed with solvents to prevent the coating from curing and forming a tough adherent cured film.
SILRES® BS 712 US cures quickly once applied to dry substrates and exposed to humidity in the air. Curing occurs at the surface and progresses to the substrate based on the available ambient moisture. Complete drying for heavier film builds may require up to 24 hours.
Containers, once opened, should be used until empty. Any remaining coating, exposed to air will continue to cure and thicken resulting in surface skinning and increased viscosity.
Please follow the additional instructions described in the customer presentation of SILRES® BS 712 US.
Graffiti removal
Small scale graffiti can removed using a wet sponge. Large scale graffity can be quickly be removed by using a commercially available pressure washer and cold water with no need for additives. SILRES® BS 712 US provides long term protection and remains effective even after the wall has been cleaned. Examples show good performance of the coating from 8 to 20 cleaning cycles.
Posters and stickers can also be peeled off surfaces treated with SILRES® BS 712 US.
