A good example is our cyclodextrin facility at Eddyville (Iowa, USA), which was expanded in 2009. Cyclodextrins are bioengineered sugar molecules that serve as stabilizers and carrier substances in the life sciences, cosmetics, food and agrochemical sectors. A substantial amount of the $21 million investment was channeled into a new by-product processing plant, which reduces overall steam consumption by 35 percent.
A group of employees at our US site in Adrian (Michigan) has set up nesting boxes for various species of bird and maintains a 2.4-km nature trail. The 97-hectare site premises also feature wildflower and butterfly gardens. For its dedication to nature and wildlife conservation, the Adrian team was awarded the US Wildlife Habitat Council’s 2008 Wildlife at WorkSM certificate, which is valid for three years.
Wacker Chemical Corporation is committed to making health, safety and the environment an integral part of the product development process. This starts with the initial stages of research and development through manufacture, handling, use, transportation, and eventual disposal of new or established products.
