Product Carbon Footprint

Scope 3 carbon footprint

WACKER aims to achieve net zero by 2045 and to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

Additionally, WACKER’s aims is to reduce upstream greenhouse gas emissions from purchased raw materials by 25 percent by 2030.

In order to manage the emission reduction, it is crucial to establish a common understanding of the calculation methodology with suppliers.
Standards and guidelines issued by the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative provide guidance.

Suppliers are requested to apply this methodology.

By 2030, we will cut our absolute upstream greenhouse gas emissions by 25%

Dr. Erk Thorsten Heyen, Senior Vice President of Procurement and Logistics

WACKER’s Commitment

  • We commit to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
  • We commit to reduce Scope 3 by 25% by 2030.
  • We are a member of many associations and bodies, such as Together for Sustainability and Stiftung Klimawirtschaft, and we support their goals.

Our Expectations toward Our Suppliers

  • We want you to submit your product carbon footprint (PCF). For 2023, this will be mandatory for a subset of our raw materials and packaging materials (our buyers will contact you). Beginning in 2024, this will be extended to all other raw materials and packaging materials.
  • All submitted PCFs have to be calculated according to the “TfS PCF guideline.”
  • We want to engage with you in discussing your path to zero emissions.
As a first step, please take the opportunity to watch the recording of the virtual TfS event “The chemical solution: Tackling scope 3 emissions in the chemical industry” from November 9, 2022. You will find the video link further down this page.

WACKER Carbon Footprint Conference

We recommend watching the video of the "WACKER Carbon Footprint Conference" held on Feb. 28, 2023. In this conference, we informed our suppliers about WACKER's sustainability targets, the introduction of the TfS PCF Guideline and the process for WACKER's PCF data collection.

Why do we want you to deal with the TfS PCF guideline?

As a member of Together for Sustainability (TfS), WACKER urges all of you to do your utmost to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the chemical industry and asks you to join the TfS Campaign “Let’s decarbonize chemical supply chains together.”

  • This PCF Guideline offers an industry-specific, tailored solution with a detailed description and interpretation of existing standards.
  • TfS’ PCF Guideline is compliant with both ISO quality management standards and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol accounting standards.
  • This harmonized generic calculation approach significantly increases efficiency and saves you time.
  • It helps us and you as our suppliers and partners to reach a common and better understanding of GHG emissions associated with products, to track emissions and to reach our individual reduction targets within the entire supply chain.

TfS Product Carbon Footprint Guideline

Together for Sustainability launches a step-by-step guide to help chemical suppliers to more precisely calculate the carbon footprint of their products – Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) – in a way that is harmonized across the industry. It’s called the PCF Guideline. The first of its kind for the chemical industry, the PCF Guideline offers specific guidance on PCF calculation requirements unique to the industry, building on commonly used international standards for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) accounting. This video provides more information on this PCF Guideline and the benefits for both suppliers and corporations.
