Solar Modules Supply Dubai Office with Energy

Let the sunshine in

Energy from the region, for the region – that was the idea behind a sustainability project at our office in Dubai. Solar panels over parking lots and on the roof of the building now supply the entire Technical Center with the electricity it needs – by harnessing the regenerative power of the sun.

Greater Sustainability, One Step at a Time

Self-Generated Electricity for our Technical Center

The sun shines bright and hot in the Middle East. Just the right place to generate energy from the warm rays. Our Technical Center in Dubai is therefore home to more than just Sales, the WACKER Academy and the Technical Development Center. Now we also produce the energy we need there ourselves. In a pioneering project for WACKER, solar modules were installed at our Technical Center in Dubai. The green electricity generated by this project largely covers the office’s annual power requirements.

Direct Use of Solar Energy

The roof and parking lot of our regional office were completely fitted with photovoltaic modules within around six months – more than 700 modules were installed in total. The construction took place on the company's own initiative and during ongoing operations. The solar panels generate around 500 MWh of electricity per year. This means that the office’s energy requirements can largely be covered independently and from renewable sources.

A Step towards a More Sustainable Economy

Not only does the initiative generate and utilize green energy directly – it also reduces CO₂ emissions as a result. A good step towards the Group-wide goal of reducing our absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2020. By 2045, we want WACKER’s operations to be completely climate neutral.

A Project That Others Can Emulate

Mohammed Sanaobar, head of the Technical Center, and Cyril Cisinski, managing director for the Africa and Middle East region, came up with the idea for the solar project and oversaw its implementation.

The solar project also reflects our participation in local strategy. With its sustainability strategy, the United Arab Emirates aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Dubai itself wants to become the world’s most sustainable city and is investing in renewable energies to achieve this.

A total of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals cover strategies to improve health and education, reduce inequality, and promote economic growth. This also includes combating climate change and using resources responsibly.

WACKER’s use of solar modules to generate energy supports the following SDGs:

SDG 7: “We are increasingly focused on the electrification of our processes and on clean and affordable energy.”
SDG 9: “We support sustainable industrialization on a broad scale and are developing future-oriented infrastructure technologies, such as e-mobility.”
