WACKER Donates €600,000 to War Victims in Ukraine
Munich , May 18, 2022
The WACKER Relief Fund donation campaign for war victims in Ukraine raised €279,050 in March and April. As announced, the company will double the amount and round it off to a total of €600,000. The WACKER Relief Fund has transfered this sum to the German Red Cross (DRK), which supports war-torn regions and the numerous refugees directly and through its sister organization – the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Following a large number of requests, WACKER has opened the aid campaign – including its commitment to double the amount of donated sum – to former employees who have retired. For tax reasons, Wacker Chemical Corporation in North America has joined the global campaign with its own appeal for donations. WACKER responded promptly to the acute emergency situation with its first donation to the DRK of €100,000 at the beginning of March.
“We are impressed with the willingness of our employees to help – both active and former. The company is doubling their donations and rounding the amount off to €600,000. Together we want to make our contribution toward helping people in need in Ukraine,” explained Angela Wörl, Executive Board member and Personnel Director of Wacker Chemie AG. “With every euro they donated, our employees have shown deep solidarity with the victims and taken a stand against this terrible war,” added Eduard-Harald Klein, chairman of the Group Employee Council.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, 5.5 million people have fled Ukraine or have been forcibly driven out in the wake of the war. Most of them are women, children and old people. 7.7 million people have been displaced within the country. Having taken just the bare necessities with them, they are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
In cooperation with the Ukrainian and Polish Red Cross, the DRC has also set up a supply line between Lublin in eastern Poland and Lviv in western Ukraine to ensure rapid and direct delivery of relief supplies to Ukraine.
