Thanks to their molecular structure, silicones are the perfect solution for insulation applications in the transmission and distribution industry. Silicone composite insulators that are coated with grime are far less prone to leakage current than insulators made of porcelain, glass or EPDM. So even when the surface is extremely dirty, leakage is prevented.
But not only insulators benefit from silicones. These days, silicone insulation materials in transmission and distribution applications are used where high operational reliability and long service lives are required, for example, silicone fluids in transformers or cable terminals for high-voltage cables made of silicone elastomers. But silicones are also used in high-performance cables for electric and hybrid vehicles.
